Elect me as your Councillor on October 25, 2010

I need your support to help lower taxes, make council more accountable and build a better future for Burlington.

Your vote will help me bring a vision to the community that will benefit all residents, including homeowners with mortgages and seniors on limited incomes.

Burlington is our home and we must continue to feel safe, enjoy a great quality of life, have adequate parks, recreation facilities and centres for seniors, a convenient transit system, well maintained roads and professional fire protection.

As a Halton Region councillor, I will continue support for a first class police service, a highly trained and well equipped paramedic service, safe and clean water and social services for those in need.

Cal's commitment:

"I will work with taxpayers and be accountable."

"Tax increases aren't acceptable. City Hall must tighten its belt. I pleadge to find efficiencies and reduce costs for taxpayers."

"The provincial and federal govenments must come to the table with funding to provide world class medical care and other key services for residents of the region."

"The interest of Ward 5 residents will be my top priority. I will bring your voices to council on all issues. Together we will make a great team."

Nomination for Burlington Council

Cal Millar, a retired Toronto Star staff writer and author, has filed nominations papers to run for the Ward 5 council position in Burlington's October 25 civic election.

Millar, 66, a resident of the ward, is seeking public office for the first time.

Running on a campaign of fiscal responsibility, transparency and accountability, he said elected representatives must do the same type of belt tightening that residents are forced to do in difficult economic times.
"There is no need to cut essential services or reduce facilities that residents rely on, but the newly elected city council should make it their duty to review all spending to ensure tax dollars are not being wasted.

"Elected representatives should work to lower tax rates instead of being proud to announce they are the same as the previous year or they've increased just a small percentage.
"Taxpayers need to keep money in their own pocket to permit them to save or pay some other bills."

Apart from hoping to cut taxes, Millar said city hall should reach out to partners to attract new businesses to the community, to create opportunity for young people and to improve playground and greenbelt areas as well as providing additional facilities for seniors.
"We have to look at every challenge as an opportunity and be creative when searching for solutions."
Millar said Burlington hasn't been seriously impacted by the type of violence that has occurred in nearby municipalities but residents should be vigilant and work cooperatively to ensure crime doesn't escalate. "We must take steps to combat vandalism and graffiti as well as doing everything possible to keep our streets safe and maintain this region as one of the safest areas in Canada."

If elected, Millar vows to work with other council members to take Burlington into the future and make the city a destination for tourists, the finest area for companies to locate, a special spot for entertainment with the new Performing Arts Centre, and maintain the municipality as a great place for people to live, work and play.
